On the 23rd of November the UK Government announced that the second national lockdown will end at midnight on Wednesday the 2nd of December.

From the 3rd of December, the UK will return to a new version of the three-tier system that features tougher restrictions.

Read the Government’s full winter plan and whenever you’re unsure which tier you fall under,  verify the coronavirus restrictions in your local area. Below we’ve broken down how the restrictions will affect rideshare drivers.

What businesses will reopen on the 3rd of December?

The following types of businesses will reopen on the 3rd of December, regardless of which tier will be in place:

  • Non-essential retail shops
  • Gyms
  • Hairdressers
  • Other personal care businesses
  • Entertainment businesses
  • Places of worship

Tip: With businesses reopening and Christmas shopping high on people’s agendas, drivers can expect retail centres (i.e. Westfield White City and Stratford) to be busy, especially during the day.

When will bars, pubs and restaurants be opened?

The opening of bars, pubs and restaurants will depend on which tier is in place for their location:

  • Tier 1 – open – offering table service only (until 11pm)
  • Tier 2 – open – only if offering substantial food service (until 11pm)
  • Tier 3 – closed – takeaway services only

Tip: The hospitality industry is one of the main drivers for rideshare demand, therefore, the reopening of these venues will increase demand. With the closing time extended until 11pm, rideshare drivers should be ready to work at closing time to capitalise on surge pricing.

What measures will be in place over Christmas?

Over the Christmas period (23-27 December) up to three different households will be allowed to mix indoors.

Additionally, people will be able to move around the country, irrespective of what local tier of restrictions they fall under.

Tip: Rideshare drivers should look to maximise their earnings over this five day period of increased flexibility as Londoners will be out and about visiting families and friends.

Will the rule of six be re-introduced?

Yes, the rule of six will be introduced again for outdoor and indoor gatherings for the foreseeable future. Here’s how it applies in all tiers:

  • Tier 1 – Mixing indoors and outdoors allowed
  • Tier 2 – No mixing indoors apart from support bubbles
  • Tier 3 – No mixing indoors and most outdoor places

Tip: Rideshare drivers can find a large number of riders around outdoor markets and large parks.

How will the end of the second lockdown affect rideshare earnings?

Rideshare earnings increased by 30% in the first week after the first national lockdown and continued to improve over the following weeks.

Drivers could expect a similar result this time around, and possibly a faster rebound as riders are more confident than after the first lockdown.

Tip: To capitalise on the expected increase in rider demand, drivers should take this opportunity to sign up to all London rideshare platforms including Uber, Bolt, Ola, and FREE NOW.
